Händels oratorium Theodora, over de vrouw van keizer Constantius I Chlorus, lijkt op veel manieren op een opera. In deze meeslepende uitvoering onder de Russische dirigent Maksim Jemeljanytsjev blijkt weer eens dat het een van de grootste prestaties is van de barokcomponist. De Amerikaanse mezzosopraan Joyce DiDonato is de grootste ster onder de solisten. Ze is evenwichtig en sonoor bij haar uitvoering van de aria ‘As with Rosy Steps the Morn’. Sopraan Lisette Oropesa en contratenor Paul-Antoine Bénos-Djian blinken eveneens uit als de christelijke martelaren Theodora en Didymus. In het hartverscheurende slot van het stuk gooien ze al hun talenten in de strijd. Het wonderbaarlijk expressieve koorgezang voegt nog meer flair toe aan de uitvoering, die liefhebbers van Händels muziek niet mogen missen.
