Brittens Spring Symphony werd voor het eerst uitgevoerd in 1949. Maar het werk klinkt nog altijd verrassend modern en fris, van de grauwe winterse klanken van de introductie, tot het lichte enthousiasme wanneer de lente in het stuk aanbreekt. Simon Rattles liveopname met het London Symphony Orchestra getuigt van een werk dat in veel opzichten zijn tijd vooruit was.
