Biography
Mezzo-soprano Mildred Miller was a longtime fixture at the Metropolitan Opera in New York and founded the Opera Theater of Pittsburgh. She was also a concert singer who specialized in orchestral material by Mahler and Brahms; in opera, she was known for "pants" roles like Cherubino in Mozart's Le nozze di Figaro. Miller had a substantial recording catalog, and much of her material remained available decades after she recorded it. Recordings she made of American art song in the middle 20th century appeared in 2011 on the two-volume set Songs by 20th Century American Composers released by the Phoenix USA label. Miller died in Pittsburgh on November 29, 2023, at age 98.
