Aadland began as a violinist and served as concertmaster of the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra from 1981 to 1989. Aadland was encouraged by star conductor Mariss Jansons to switch to conducting. He began conducting the Trondheim Symphony in the early 2000s and held the posts of chief conductor there between 2004 and 2010. In 2020, he began a stint as the chief conductor and artistic director of the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra. Recorded highlights include 2023's Bruch & Tveitt, featuring violinist Ragnhild Hemsing and the Bergen Philharmonic, and 2025's Bartók: Divertimento & Music for Strings, Percussion & Celesta with the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra.
