Gemma New

Gemma New is a conductor from New Zealand known for her sensitive attention to detail and strong commitment to new music. In 2010, she founded the Lunar Ensemble, a contemporary music collective that premiered 30 works, and has since championed composers including Thomas Adès and Anna Clyne. New led the world premiere of Michael Gandolfi's In America at Tanglewood in 2018 and the world premiere of Huang Ruo's City of Floating Sounds with the BBC Philharmonic in 2024. Her principal posts have included music director of the Hamilton Philharmonic (2015-2024) and artistic advisor and principal conductor of the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra from 2022. New led a 2025 recording of Bruch's Violin Concerto No. 1 and Tüür's Angel's Share.
