Biography
Avant-garde composer and free improviser Scott McLaughlin combines ideas from experimental music with those from such disciplines as systems theory and philosophy. McLaughlin's music, in his own words, "is concerned with relationships between minimal processes of transformation and proliferation: ideas of recursion, hysteresis, difference, cluster-microtonality, chaos/complexity theory, and interactivity." His works have been performed by clarinetist Heather Roche and violinist Mira Benjamin. In 2024, McLaughlin joined with Benjamin and pianist Zubin Kanga for the album We Are Environments for Each Other. By that time, more than ten of his compositions had been recorded. McLaughlin has been on the faculty at the University of Leeds since 2012.
