Biography
The music of composer Ina Boyle was neglected despite her prolific output and despite support from her teacher Ralph Vaughan Williams. Even the general rediscovery of 20th century music by women has not resulted in many recordings of her work. Boyle was born on March 8, 1889, near Enniskerry, County Wicklow, Ireland. She spent much of her life there. Boyle traveled to London periodically for lessons with Vaughan Williams, who wrote letters to performing organizations on her behalf. She often sent her works out to conductors and ensembles, but she remained apart from the music scene, and her works generally had little impact. Despite this, Boyle remained a prolific composer for much of her life. When she died in Greystones, County Wicklow, on March 10, 1967, Boyle was little known. An Ina Boyle Society Limited had been founded to promote research into her music.
