Biography
The Frankfurt Opera and Museum Orchestra is one of Germany's oldest and most renowned symphonic ensembles. Its beginnings date back to the late 18th century, when Frankfurt's municipal opera house came into being. Its music director at the time was Louis Spohr, and the line of conductors since then has been equally illustrious. The orchestra plays a ten-concert subscription season in Frankfurt at the city's Alte Oper (now a concert hall). Its music director as of 2018 was Sebastian Weigle. The orchestra is perhaps less well known than some of its German peers because it has recorded sparsely compared with others. In the 2010s, however, the group began an association with the label Oehms, recording mostly opera by Wagner and Strauss. ~ James Manheim
