Mayumi Miyata

Biography

Mayumi Miyata entered college to study piano, but soon took up the study of Japanese court music and instruments, eventually becoming known world-wide in the 1980s as a gifted sho soloist. Many composers such as John Cage, Toru Takemitsu, Toshio Hosokawa, and Helmut Lachenmann have written pieces specifically suited to her talent and instrument.
