A lo largo del siglo XX se produjo una explosión de estilos y lenguajes musicales que reflejaban los rápidos e importantes cambios históricos y culturales de la época. El serialismo, modernismo, neoclasicismo, minimalismo y otros innumerables experimentos florecieron, dando lugar a una gran riqueza sonora durante este periodo. Los siglos XVIII y XIX se asocian a menudo con la melodía y armonía, pero en el siglo XX el ritmo dio un paso adelante con resultados maravillosos.
